This week has been extremely stressful, we have a lot of work due and the fact that it's so much and that it is very intricate makes it hard. We worked a lot on everything, the film guide, the film activity, the activity to present during the NAMI walk, the little book, even the shirts we did a lot of work on. So from that I personally worked the most on the the little book, as that one was the one that was due the soonest and needed in my opinion the most work done to it. I was able to use a lot of me work from my presentation to put into the little book however I had trouble as in one statement I had I said that the frontal cortex is developing during puberty and that part of the brain is responsible for a lot of decision making and other things, which since its under construction during puberty means that we are not able to connect or talk with adults as easily because we are still forming things in our brain that are important to making certain choices while adults have already completed their brain development. The issue I had was I lost my link to support that and I could not find it anywhere. I never found the exact link I had used before. But I found one that works just as well, which is right here, from the American Academy of Child & Adolescence Psychiatry And a quote from the website to support my statement is "the frontal lobe of the brain is still changing and maturing well into adulthood." So this helped a lot as it solved one of the bigger issues this week in me finding evidence to support what I was saying. It also just made me even more the more realize now that we are still growing which I always knew, but I sometimes forget and feel I am who I will be for the rest of my life.
As far as what I will do to exhibit like a professional I will use more of a stronger vocabulary. I can see tomorrow being a great day, the only huge issue for me will be the waking up early thing. But I hope I can use a good amount of wording and explanation in a professional manner to show the exhibiting the most professionally I can. I do not plan anything crazy or plan to do anything specific I can think on my feet for the most part and have a good feeling about how I will present my project and my breaking of my stigma.

This week is our first week back from break, and it was a little weird to be honest coming back and talking about what we read over the break. Overall I feel like the break was super needed, I got to the point in which I felt almost numb of doing the same things over and over again. So taking time off for myself was greatly appreciated. But as far as this week coming back, it felt weird like I said for the first day but other than that it went back to normal somewhat fast. I won't lie and say that I came in super excited. But I did come in with a positive attitude to see my friends that I had not seen since break started. When I got back in, humanities was somewhat average and was relatively the same thing I had been doing two weeks prior to our break. So that was not per say boring, but was not super exciting either. However I did have a good time getting back with my group. From there I went to biology and this was pretty interesting actually, my group is pretty talkative and we all have a easy way of communicating. So it was not any type of like coming back, it was as if we had seen each other the day before. Which was cool cause then that made overall everything easy and more smooth. We then got to working on our book as far as what we read and any other research we might have done over break. Coming back was easy and smooth overall, we were able to get into deep conversations involving learning pretty easy and without effort.
This week, was relatively eventful. I spent most of the first half preparing for festival. As a group we talked about our reading of our book early in the week. Then we spent the rest getting ourselves ready, We needed to make sure we had enough knowledge of the topic to be able to hold conversations with people and to show them that we know what we are talking about. For the most part I would say we already had a good understanding but us talking and gathering more information, did help us and make us more ready. But going back to the book. For the most part our conversation this week was for the most part pretty similar to the other ones we have done. We had a really indepth conversation, about what we thought of the book so far. We have a lot of interesting thoughts on the book but also kind of disagree as to what the author says. Some of the book is in his own opinions or through his own learnings which I do not completely agree with the one hundred percent. One quote that really stuck with me is from chapter 3. It states “we do not tremble because we are afraid or cry because we feel sad; we are afraid because we tremble and sad because we cry” This quote is about how fear is not fear it self, we get scared at the thought of getting scared. However the author presents these as a personal point of view and it annoys me because I would like him to decide if it's gonna be factual or opinion based not a mix. As a group we do think that the book offers a bunch of useful knowledge and useful facts, that will greatly help us with our project. I feel for the most part we are prepared and are on task with our work which is a great sign.
I feel like my knowledge this week has grown in some aspects. From reading the book to just gaining things from my peers. I think the best part of this week to me though was doing the critiques.. This gave me so much help for my drafts of it. I feel like the critiques as a whole this week were really good. I enjoyed looking at the t shirt designs this week as they gave me a lot of inspiration. I critiqued Jonathan's and Mahliya’s T shirt designs. They both were really good, Jonathan's was a very almost gritty image of a skull with its brain exposed holding a gun to its head, then a cloud raining on over the skull. I really liked his idea, because his drawing although simple in some aspects was very complex because it had a lot of hidden messages and almost Easter egg like things hidden throughout his design which I thought made it even better. Because it was like the longer you looked at it the more you found and uncovered. From that I was able to get a ton of inspiration for my designs.
This week felt like another version of last week. Not in a bad way but in the sense that we took another field trip. I actually liked this field trip a lot more than the one from last week. The trip really started when after we got split up and my group sat in a conference room with a psychologist. She explained how her job works, how college was for her, and much more. She began describing what it would take to be where she is job wise. She stated around eight or nine years of college. She then began talking to us about how she helps her patients, began describing how their confidentiality works. It is something that is very important as the psychologist can not legally say anything to anyone no matter what. Expect if they say they want to harm themselves or others. They even said that they publicly can not say if the patient even goes to that psychologist or not. After that we went into even smaller groups. We went to a few different sections. However I preferred one section over the rest. And that was the last one. The last one was a version of how we see words. So the lady had a piece of paper with words of colors. So the word blue or green, one sheet had the words corresponding with the colors, the other had one where it was intentionally not matching the colors. This really like opened my eyes because I was able to see how we as people work mentally as far as when someone sees a certain word and how that thought registers to their mind. This one was the most fascinating to me. This past week the main thing we did was go on a field trip to UCSD. I went in the car with Makai, Rafa, Jonathan, and obviously Makai’s mom. The ride there was alright nothing crazy happened or anything that’s worth noting at least. When we arrived we had to walk into one of the buildings. From there we split up into multiple groups. We split out actual bio groups in half so some went and did something while others did something else completely different. The purpose of this was to make it so some of the group members that would experience or learn something would tell the rest of the group what happened and what they saw. When we split up we spent a pretty long time walking. We went to the autism research lab. When we first got there, we were all sat down and watched on of the I guess researchers? Give a pretty extensive and overall in depth presentation. She told us how they used games as a way to stimulate the children's many sensors. This really grabbed my attention. They talked about game design and software development. Which is something I am super into, I have always had a huge fascination in making things especially things that could change things such as help a child with autism. So honestly her telling me that the big part of them creating the games had me super intrigued. I never would have associated technology development with autism research. But none the less that was my biggest take away and I think it is cool because I was able to see that software design and engineering does not just stay in one place but instead has many different places to apply it to. This week we spent time listening to others mostly. We would sit down and listen to the people presenting. I feel like the presenters them self were forgettable, I also feel like their presentations itself were kind of forgetful not in the sense that they were bad. But as in I knew most of the things, they did give a lot of information that was new to me. I enjoyed that aspect but I just disliked sitting there and them going over information I knew already, just to wait for them to say something that is actually useful or new to me. So I would not say it was bad or a waste of time, but I just feel like I could have gotten the information a lot quicker. I understand for those in the class that do not know it was probably useful. But for me I found it tiresome and could have been condensed. However like I said I did find use from these. Such as the part where we looked at slices of the brain and how each part is laid out. I thought it was super interesting to see that some parts of the brain might be able to be seen for 20 slices while others seen for 40. I never thought to look at something in that way as far as in sections or “pieces” instead of as a whole. Overall the week was good I got some good information to help me, however like I said I do feel like most of the presentations given to us could have been compressed into maybe one whole day but obviously the world does not revolve around me. Nonetheless I hope that the class as a whole enjoyed it and was able to take somethings away. Honestly it kind of scares me thinking about spending another 4 years at a different school. I feel like I'm basically graduating to go to school again. It is very unmotivated if I'm honest. However at the same time I would like to go to college for the experience and for the learning I will have. However if you take out the basic classes, it would take me and most people maybe 1 to 2 years to finish their major because the basic classes take up so much time and effort. So I wish you did not need to take those and purely got to decide on our own. With that said the school I was most impressed by was UCSC. The vibe of it was really nice. It was in this forest like area and had a really cool calm relaxing atmosphere. Which I think would be important to have considering college is most likely going to be a really stressful time for me. The campus looked really nice and the people their for the most part seemed cool and welcoming. The other schools such as Berkeley, seemed very sad and really depressed. I feel like I myself without having family there and no real relationships would become very sad as well. As you can see I think having a good environment is so important. After being at high tech for so long it is finally coming to me that the environment I learn with is just as important as the teachers and people I learn with.
I felt like this week was the most uneventful yet most learning experience I have gotten in Bio this semester so far. I might be exaggerating, but I feel like I truly learned a lot this week from the presentations given in class. I originally thought it was going to be boring, or even stupid. I do not find enjoyment out of watching other present for a whole class period. But this was actually a really good week as far as the information I was able to gather from what my peers said.
On Tuesday I felt like I had a good day in the sense that it seemed like it had set the week off to a good start as far as Biology class goes. I learned a lot about split personalities, depression, sleep deprivation, and similar issues. I thought it was very thought provoking at first because every presentation would basically throughout facts or ideas that I had not either heard of or thought about. From that Tuesday I was really excited to see what everyone else had to say. Further on to the week I feel like I learned a lot throughout Wednesday and Thursday. I actually thoroughly enjoyed watching the presentations. I think it was probably the funnest and most productive week learning wise I have had. I did for a little bit feel like some of the slide shows and topics were to similar and kind of wished people maybe had chosen more unique things or maybe a more unique way to present their info. I still liked watching each person speak I think it was a good way to show why we are all wanting to do our specific topics. We can use the pig to go deeper and learn about the human anatomy, because when you go inside it is very similar to a human's. As far as organs and the layout of where each piece of the body is, it is relatively similar to a human's so you can still learn from it and get a good idea about what a humans might be like or look like. We also get to see how the different organs and systems are connected. We get a pretty true look at how a lot of the organs are connected to each other, such as how the small intestine is connected to the stomach.
I feel like the people interested in being a doctor of in the medical field got a lot more out of this then the people who are not really looking into that, as they got a good look into literally everything about the organs and different systems. You get to visually see it. We can actually learn a lot about the nervous system. Such as the overall design of it, and how it is placed as far as the parts of the brain. We are also just overall able to get a look at how the brain is and how it is connected to the spine. It is somewhat obvious but not completely and not easily. It does transition fairly easy to some of the other systems, visually you can tell the brain is the central control room for everything so it is pretty obvious to understand how it is connected to everything. |
